General Description
This gene encodes a subunit of a large protein complex known as a vacuolar H+-ATPase (V-ATPase). The protein complex acts as a pump to move protons across the membrane. This movement of protons helps regulate the pH of cells and their surrounding environment. V-ATPase dependent organelle acidification is necessary for such intracellular processes as protein sorting, zymogen activation, and receptor-mediated endocytosis.

Function of the protein in oral and tooth development
v-H-ATPase is proposed to act as proton pump to acidify the enamel space, required to complete enamel mineralization. Research on mouse by Bronckers et al., (2012) reported that Tcirg1, which is essential for osteoclasts to pump protons into the bone, is not appreciably expressed in maturation stage of ameloblasts. The authors also suggested that a v-H-ATPase is potentially involved in intracellular acidification (Bronckers et al., 2012).
