Function of the protein in oral and tooth development

SLC34A1 is a phosphate Pi transporter. Phosphate (Pi) as an essential component of hydroxyapatite crystals. Studies suggest a key role for membrane proteins controlling Pi uptake during mineralization in the tooth (Merametdjian et al, 2018; Millán, 2013).
