Gene Name
MMP13: Matrix metallopeptidase 13
Gene ID
4322
General Description
This gene encodes a member of the peptidase M10 family of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Proteins in this family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and metastasis. The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate the mature protease. This protease cleaves type II collagen more efficiently than types I and III.

Function of the protein in oral and tooth development

Duncan et al. (2022) used MMP13-knockout (Mmp13 -/- ) mice to investigate the role of Matrix-metalloproteinase-13 (MMP13) in tooth development. In their study, immunohistochemistry results demonstrated high MMP13-expression in pulp-tissue, ameloblasts, odontoblasts, and dentin in developing WT-molars. The authors also reproted critical alterations in the dentin-phenotype, dentin-tubule iregularity, significant reduced dentin volume in Mmp13 -/- molars (Duncan et al., 2022). The overall resutls indicate MMP13 as critical for tooth development and mineralization processes, with the Wnt-signaling pathway.
