Gene Name
HPX: Hemopexin
Gene ID

Gene Sequence
General Description
This gene encodes a plasma glycoprotein that binds heme with high affinity. The encoded protein is an acute phase protein that transports heme from the plasma to the liver and may be involved in protecting cells from oxidative stress.

Function of the protein in oral and tooth development
During enamel formation, highly specialized enamel matrix proteins are secreted from ameloblasts. While enamel is mineralizing, ameloblasts also secrete matrix metalloproteinase 20 (MMP 20). MMP20 is located on 11q22.2, forming a cluster with eight other MMP genes, encoding a basic hemopexin (Hpx)-containing modular structure: a signal peptide, a putative peptidoglycan-binding (PG binding 1) domain (Kawasaki & Suzuki, 2012).
