Gene Name
HMGA2: High mobility group AT-hook 2
Gene ID
8091
General Description
This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the non-histone chromosomal high mobility group (HMG) protein family. HMG proteins function as architectural factors and are essential components of the enhancesome. This protein contains structural DNA-binding domains and may act as a transcriptional regulating factor. Identification of the deletion, amplification, and rearrangement of this gene that are associated with myxoid liposarcoma suggests a role in adipogenesis and mesenchymal differentiation.

Function of the protein in oral and tooth development

Ge et al., (2013) studied the exression level of high mobility group AT-hook 2 in rodent incisor cervical loop and molar Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS). Quantitative real time reverse transcription-PCR and immunohistochemistry were used for the study. The results showed that the expression levels of high mobility group AT-hook 2 was up-regulated in cervical loop epithelial cells, but decreased or unchanged in other cells during development.
