Function of the protein in oral and tooth development

Using immunohistochemistry, Parry et al. (2016) found that GPR68 is expressed in the enamel organ, including in ameloblast cells, during all stages of amelogenesis in rat. The authors observed staining of the apical surface of ameloblasts with anti-GPR68, indicating a possible role for GPR68 as a pH monitor of the developing enamel matrix (Parry et al., 2016).
