General Description
This gene encodes a protein with similarity to the estrogen receptor. Its function is unknown; however, a similar protein in mouse plays an essential role in placental development.

Function of the protein in oral and tooth development
Weber et al., (2014) found that families with recessive ESRRB mutations and hearing impairment showed more extensive dental destruction by caries. ESRRB experession in whole saliva also showed differences depending on sex and dental caries experience (Weber et al., 2014).
